More Than Two Months?

Yeah, I have been lazy.

I cleaned up some of the sidebar, and will find some new content to post. For now, though:

How Soon We Forget

I was saddened to see that the Haiti earthquake dropped to page A8 of the Sunday Albuquerque Journal. What was so much more important that it needed to be on the front page? State budget problems and the New Mexico film industry.

The people of Haiti are going to need our assistance long after the world has lost interest and considers its troubles to be yesterday's news.

...or the beginning of a new one until January 1, 2011.

(As you can probably tell, this is one of my personal pet peeves.)

Zero Tolerance = Zero Common Sense

Once again, the dictum of "zero tolerance" is wielded like a clumsy club.

Note that the student was parked off campus.

Note that the school used an "ammunition sniffing" dog to uncover the shotgun. (and to think that they tell us that California has a budget crisis.)

Note that he did nothing wrong.

I want my country back. In High School, not only did we keep our rifles and shotguns in our cars and trucks in the school parking lot (some displayed in open gun racks) so as to hunt before and after school, we were also permitted to check out .22 rifles at the ROTC armory so as to shoot on the 50' indoor range without adult supervision. And to think that none of us ever thought once about shooting up our school.

I just bet...

Strange Stuff Today

Several odd items in the news today:

1. Bernanke says that the recession is very likely over.

But unemployment will continue to rise? Don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain.

2. "You Lie!" = racism?

It looks like the race baiters know no depth to their depravity.

3. Shreveport Mayor pulled over by phony cop.

This might not seem like it fits in the same post as the previous two items, but this Mayor recently argued that motorists have no rights when pulled over the police. It seems a bit ironic that he expects to have his rights preserved. (Never mind that somebody needs to give this Mayor a lesson on civics. Suspend your rights? I am sure glad that I don't live in Shreveport!)

Looks like somebody forgot Rule # 4

There are Four Rules of safe firearms handling. They are:

1) Always treat all firearms as if they are loaded.
2) Never point a firearm at anything that you don't want to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on your target.
4) Always be sure of your target, and what lies beyond it.

This story shows why all of these rules are important. Yikes!

Praying for the President

I am praying that our President will be converted by the power of God to salvation and the knowledge of the truth:

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. - 1 Timothy 2:1-4 (ESV)

This misguided "minister" has a different idea. Where does he get the Scriptural support for that? How is that "godly and dignified in every way"?

Ted Kennedy deserves more attention than any Republican?

Even living Presidents? That is what this "journalist" thinks:

...until the Federal Government is "paying" for your health care.

If they can't even manage the "Cash for Clunkers" program why would anyone think that they can manage a program that has life and death consequences? Only 2% of car dealers paid so far, and 4 out of 5 claims denied for "minor oversight"? Not enough staffing, complicated forms and requirements? It sounds like normal bureaucratic bungling. No one is going to die if the clunkers don't get paid on time, but what happens when you can't get needed surgery or cancer treatment?

A Cup of Cold Water

Regardless of one's views on illegal immigration it would be hard for me to believe that anyone would see this article as anything but troubling. There is something wrong when someone is punished for providing water for travelers in the southwest desert.

Grasping at Straws

I am tempted to say "so what?" about this news story. This is about as relevant as a news story that said something like the following:

Police have revealed today that last night's drunk driver was driving an automobile manufactured by the same company that sold a car to the driver of last month's horrific tragedy. More at 11:00.

Accessories? He bought accessories? What, like maybe a holster? An extra magazine? A gunbelt? Shooting glasses and earmuffs?

Hey you, Federal Criminal. That's right, you!

"Every year, thousands of upstanding, responsible Americans run afoul of some incomprehensible federal law or regulation and end up serving time in federal prison."

There has been an explosion in the number of federal crimes added to the books the past couple of years. Many of these are felonies, and will get you hard time in a federal prison as well as strip away your rights to vote and possess firearms. Pretty soon we might see more laws against "hate crimes" that could be used to criminalize the public reading of portions of the Bible.

Don't think that persecution is coming? Better think again.

(I won't get on my soapbox (much) at this point, But what were "conservatives" thinking when they proposed infringements upon our freedoms in the name of stopping terrorism or waging war on drugs. Don't they know that governments can't be trusted, which is the whole reason why the Founding Fathers limited government and codified the protection of civil liberties in the first place?)

Do you think...

...that the ACLU will file suit to stop this egregious violation of rights?

I wonder how many folks will plant a cheap gun on the property of an unsuspecting neighbor in order to collect $1,000.00? For them this might be the "best program in the country".

Ehrlich, Holdren claimed that, "if the population control measures are not initiated immediately, and effectively, all the technology man can bring to bear will not fend off the misery to come."^[9] In 1973 Holdren encouraged a decline in fertility to well below replacement in the United States, because "210 million now is too many and 280 million in 2040 is likely to be much too many"^[10]. Currently, the U.S. population is 306,892,000^[11]. In 1977 he co-authored (with Paul R. Ehrlich and Anne H. Ehrlich) Ecoscience^[12], which discussed the possible role of a "planetary regime" in enforcing population control. Also discussed was the possibility of adding a sterilant to drinking water; "Adding a sterilant to drinking water or staple foods is a suggestion that seems to horrify people more than most proposals for involuntary fertility control. Indeed, this would pose some very difficult political, legal, and social questions, to say nothing of the technical problems. No such sterilant exists today, nor does one appear to be under development. To be acceptable, such a substance would have to meet some rather stiff requirements: it must be uniformly effective, despite widely varying doses received by individuals, and despite varying degrees of fertility and sensitivity among individuals; it must be free of dangerous or unpleasant side effects; and it must have no effect on members of the opposite sex, children, old people, pets, or livestock.".

This is scary stuff.

As anyone who knows the rudiments of firearms safety can tell you, Mayor Nagin is practicing very poor muzzle control. Maybe it is a really good idea that they got 600 bullet-proof vests, so that they can double or triple them up, seeing as a 5.56 slug at that range is going to punch through multiple layers of Kevlar.

Of course, this is the same man who found it necessary to disarm law-abiding gun owners following Hurricane Katrina, telling them that only the authorities were professional enough to be armed.
